Need help hacking/modding a nintendo ds file on my pc. I'm looking for an app or way that will allow me to get into the game's files and edit a few of the images and animations. Newbie to modding here, so forgive my ignorance.

There is no one application to do things -- games can, and do, have all sorts of oddball ways of storing and using file formats. There are some franchises that get documented more than others -- pokemon, mario platformers, mario kart, sonic, final fantasy, fire pro wrestling, megaman, advance wars, golden sun and fire emblem being the main ones of note there.
There are formats Nintendo provided for the DS ( https://www.romhacking.net/documents/[469]nds_formats.htm ) but not all games will use them. Several tools can handle those formats -- crystaltile2, tinke and a few others if you go looking.

That's exactly what I needed, thank you. I'll try out those tools you mentioned and see what comes of them. Specifically the type of game I want to edit is a visual novel, but the gameplay is puzzle rooms (Nine hours, nine persons, nine doors). The only thing I want to edit is the artwork for one of the characters, so if anyone has any tips on that I'd be glad to hear them. Other than that thanks again, and we'll see how this goes! ^_^

Another question: I have the .dat files extracted, but I'm unsure how to go about editing the images inside of them. I know you're supposed to open it and that there will be a lot of text, but will I be able to edit the images personally or do I have to extract and reinject them into the code somehow?
