Hacking Help getting started on YSMenu Skins

I just recently installed YS Menu to my R4 and i would like help on how to create skins.

I've been reading the forum's for a while and from what i understood i have to get 2 .bmp image and replace YSMenu1 and YSMenu2.

From there i need help. What programs can i use to help me modify how these pictures look like? Any help with this is appreciated.

I'm pretty sure i know how to change images to .bmp so thats not my problem.

Anything to get me started is great.

I've made templates for helping with skinning. It makes placing all the proper elements in their correct places very easy.

At least use Paint.NET. It's even got a PSD plug-in.
