Hacking help ds lite cheats

Hi,

New to nintendo ds lite but have r4ds
followed instructions to run cheats but games still just run as normal.
what I have done so far.

downloaded bugfix and ran against file
downloaded cheats
removed the system file
download the new menu_ds file with patch applied to ds lite
added cheats onto ds lite as cheats.dat
but games just run as normal
then tried other cheat file usrcheats after removing other cheat file.
but still games just run as normal without the option for cheats.

I must be missing something..... any help please.. as new to the games.

I haven't seen a cheat yet that won't work without the "bugfix" thing.
My recommendation: Use default 1.18 firmware from www.r4ds.com
Make sure you're using the specific cheat.dat file and not one of the others: http://cheats.gbatemp.net/latest/CHEAT.DAT.zip
Unzip it in the _system_ folder and once done you should be able to press Y when you have the game highlighted in order to access the cheat menu.
