Step 1. Find a method of entering RCM from the thread I linked to above. You can't do anything else until you complete this step.

You can, but if you're going to install AutoRCM, I'd update afterwards using ChoiDujourNX so you can update without burning fuses. This will give you the ability to downgrade later if you want to.

I highly advise against using a paperclip. You will eventually damage the pins in your joycon rail. Paperclips have no flex and will bend the pins. Either buy a proper jig or mod your joycon. I originally modded my joycon with a Reed switch but now I use autorcm since I use the switchme! chip. I know some dipshit will try to argue the fact now that I've said it because some people just don't have common sense but do it properly.

There are lots of ways to enter RCM, but the paper clip method is one of the easiest methods. The foil method is another great option, but some struggle with it. After you load RCM using the paper clip method, install AutoRCM so you never have to use the paper clip again. Then, use ChoiDujourNX to update to 6.2.0 while leaving AutoRCM installed.

He's only using the paper clip method one time. There is no need to modify the joy con.

See....point made. Shoving tinfoil inside your expensive device is just as dumb.

Okey I gonna go against everyone here.

    1) Use your paperclip, BUT ONLY ONCE THEN YOU WON'T NEED IT ANYMORE!
    2) Inject Hekate, enable it's AutoRCM. (https://elijahzawesome.github.io/web-cfw-loader/ this site is great, you only need a USB-A to USB-C cable, if you got a pro controller you got one of those already!)
    3) Update using ChonjNX to 6.2.0 and keep it's AutoRCM.
    4) Start using your Switch, I recommend sdsetup.com (It's a Kosmos site for us that are noobish or just down right lazy).

What AutoRCM does it ALWAYS make you go to RCM so no need to press down the paperclip. I still recommend you get a jig just incase. they're dirt cheap on Aliexpress (Heck, get the RCMLoader dongle. It's pretty great so far!)

EDIT: TAKE A BACKUP THE FIRST THING YOU DO IN HEKATE!

It’s pretty simple :P. The bootloader checks the number of burnt fuses, sees that more fuses are burnt than what it wants, then it panics

That's what I don't quite understand... What does "it panics" mean? Is that just the term used for it won't boot up.

As in, "Oh crap! There are 4 burnt fuses but there should only be 3! WHAT DO I DO?" *Unconsious Switch from panicing*

That's not exactly an accurate description of the tinfoil method of entering RCM. It's relatively safe, as is the paper clip method, especially if it's only being used one time to install AutoRCM.

We will see him back in a week complaining that his switch won't boot.

Neither are safe. autorcm is good when you have a chip that will auto send the payload. Its far from the best option when using a dongle but like a said some dipshit will argue it.

The vast majority of people who use these methods to boot into RCM do so successfully. They're both relatively safe.

There are users who have had minor issues with AutoRCM. I'm not aware of many people, if any, who have had substantive issues with the paper clip and/or tinfoil methods, particularly when only using the methods one time.

If you cannot articulate any problems people have actually had with these methods, there's not much reason to avoid them.

They shouldn't be using a jig one time. like i said, autorcm is not the best choice. either use a proper jig and dongle\pc\phone or use a chip with autorcm. I'm not sure why this is such a hard concept to grasp.
