for what little extra is really done that's worth it.Hardware acceleration of the UI, meaning your graphics card is offloading the task of drawing the screen (outside of 3D games) off your processor, freeing up orcessing power to actually run programs, which is the same stuff linux and OSX have had for years... meaning that if you'ren ot on integrated graphics, Aero is FASTER than XP's graphical mode!

Separating some driver models from the kernal, so on Vista/7 if your video driver crashes it DOESN'T bring down everything else with a BSOD.

UAC, better security.

Updated windows movie maker and windows media player and all that jazz.

I bought a laptop and downgraded it from Vista to XP, on Vista it could barely run The Sims 2, on XP, it ran SO much better. Its resources weren't completely hogged up.

Steam screen name implies you at least play some games on your computer.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you absolutely HAVE to upgrade to DX10 but you should upgrade to Win7 if you buy a new computer at least.

By today's standard, of course it's a piece of shit. But its standards at release, most Vista-bound laptops that weren't stupidly expensive suffered the same shit, an operating system that was released with just enough hardware to keep it going at a smoothness before the user started to actually use it. This laptop in question is one of the first Vista models. Or was, 'til I gave it to my ex... and now it doesn't work, so meh to it all anyways.



As for the actual computer, my gaming rig, naturally that could handle the OS without much noticeable difference, some better, and DX11 will be nicer too I suppose. But I just don't have the need to move on yet. By the time I do there will be no absolute reason to stay on XP. There's little now, mostly just for stubborness's sake (like I said, the laptop needs to be downgraded, gaming's alright for moving up)--I just don't feel like it yet, like there's any real reason to move on when things are working fine for the moment. Just as I'm not going to overhaul my rig until it's obvious most games then-released will be pushing my machine: I'm not one to be fickle and jump on the next thing for the sake of jumping when the setup I currently hide within works fine enough

So much for XP. Win7 runs well even on 512MB computers, if you disable Aero. And if you have a PC which has less than 512MB, it's seriously time to upgrade

There's one thing you forget: most people don't care. So what if it doesn't have all these fancy megahertz, the average user is happy if he can browse the internet, check his email, write his documents etc. I'm certainly not a novice, but I'm still like this. If I want to play games, I'll play games on a console. I don't use any video editing programs. Why would I buy a new computer for 1000 euros when I can buy one for 200 euros which can do whatever I want just fine? Same for the OS. I'm personally a Linux user. Maybe it won't do everything Windows can (although I'm sure the reverse is also true) but it does what it needs to do, both fast and safe. I have a partition with Windows XP just in case I want to use it, and I don't plan on upgrading it any time soon.

I admit it lags when installing things, but relatively i can multi-task and browse the internet quite fine (ive never had to hard reset ever) its never bugged out on me

Your hard drive is either the old sort or the new sort. In reality if you're running an OS newer than XP, you're not gonna notice any difference.

The only thing that gave me troubles was MS office 2007, so i just used open office instead.

it should never give you trouble unless you installed the genuine update for it which checks if its pirated or not (update isnt even required) you can still install sp1 and sp2 without it and it would still work fine
