.Hack//G.U Last Recode heading westward

Bandai Namco will be bringing remastered versions of the .hack//G.U. series to PlayStation 4 and PC sometime in late 2017. The full trilogy of the G.U. series will be included in Last Recode, and will have new features such as 60fps framerate, 1080p HD assets, and widescreen support. Better gameplay balancing is also included, alongside a "cheat" mode, that lets players start the game with max stats.

hack//G.U. Last Recode – the definitive .hack//G.U. experience for existing fans and newbies – collects the three .hack//G.U. action-RPG titles; Rebirth, Reminisce and Redemption with updated 1080p, 16:9 widescreen picture, and 60 fps frame rate, gameplay balance changes and additional features to be announced in the upcoming months.

.hack is a multimedia franchise created and developed by famed Japanese developer CyberConnect2. Comprising of video games, anime, novels, and manga, the world of .hack focuses on the mysterious events surrounding a wildly popular in-universe massively multiplayer role-playing game called The World. .hack//G.U. begins after the events of the original .hack series with players assuming the role of Haseo as he tracks down a powerful Player Killer named Tri-Edge who killed his friend’s in-game avatar Shino, and put her in a coma in real life.

In addition to offering the .hack//G.U. trilogy, .hack//G.U. Last Recode will also include enhanced battle balance and game pacing to provide an optimal experience as well as a new Cheat Mode allowing players who want to just enjoy the story to start the game with full stats.

I really enjoyed the GU series on PS2 and im glad its getting a remake but i would have loved to see one of the games we never got out here, a new .hack game or the first 4 games re-done (mainly because it needed some changes the most and i never finished it).

newb to the series question: Do I need to play the other 4 first?
You don't have to play the first 4, but you would get a better idea on event's that are talked about, as well as some characters. But if you go right into G.U. then I think you should be fine since the story is different.

I would recommend that you start with the first 4 as it would help you to understand certain transformation sequences and why they are important to the game/series.

I don't understand the love for this series. The combat was shit and the story was meh. I put 15 hours into it and gave up.

It only took me 13 to complete the first game, so I'm not sure what you were doing. At the time it was pretty revolutionary because until that point, dungeon crawlers of the type were relegated to MMOs for the PC. .hack was like a 'meta' game in the sense that it was the world of an MMO, but you played offline. The story was actually pretty cool, sort of a light version of early PC cyber-horror games where the story unraveled in creepy logs.

Gameplay-wise (if we're treating it as its own genre), FFXII surpassed it by quite a bit. Story-wise, you'll can find more interesting stuff in visual novels and you know, actual books, but it's pretty singular as regular video games go.

Always wanted to play them since I loved the series when I was younger. Gotta play the original ones though.. When are they making a VR game?

Hell yes. Wanted the original 4, but I'll take what I can get when it comes to this franchise in the west.

Wait, it's worse than FFXII? Now I'm skeptical of getting this game..

I can only speak for the original series, by the time the G.U. games were released, I didn't have time in my life for long RPGs. One of the elements which was sorely missing from the originals was the ability to create your own character, so it has that going for it. As for how it stands to FFXII... hell, let's just say you'd be better off playing the PSO games for PSP. The keyword-driven random dungeon creation was novel back in the day, but I don't know that it's all that hot now.

Did not see that coming, this has been well deserved for a long time now though good to see the series getting some shine.

IMOQ never let you create a character. You're not mixing up "Project dot. Hack" with the Japan-only "fragment", are you?

Gameplay was similar from what I hear, but "fragment" had the added plus of actually playing with other people. in the original IMOQ, you were stuck as a Twinblade class. The only "Customization" was the name in those games, but the MC was canonically called "Kite."

Woot! Day one for PC!

I did finished the first part of the trilogy on PS2 in almost one sitting and then I started the second one until I got a cat. That concludes my one sit gaming sessions...

...and now I have six cats.

The GU games have much better gameplay than the original 4 games, in fairness. The original games were 'functional'. I enjoyed them in spite of the battle system.

Awesome. One of my old Girlfriends loved these games on PS2 and I used to watch her play. I never actually played them myself. In glorious 60fps, i'll be happy to.

Yeah, I heard the news, oh I wanted the HD versions of those cinematics for a bit too long now~
Glad they finally decided to relaunch the series in HD! AND EVEN FOR PC!!!

Wouldn't it be great to have the rest of the hack series games for PC, IN HD as well?
A man can always dream...

Good news for me! I broke my Vol. 1 disc from using Character Mods too much. Oooh, that'd be a cool addition: after completing a certain point, you can play as other characters, perhaps selectable from the Cheat menu!!
