While I was successful in getting GxGeo to load, I can't get the rom list to appear.

What am I doing wrong?

Are your roms on hdd and gxgeo on your sd?
Try making also a folder on your hdd like this apps>gxgeo
So basicly copy what on your sd card to your hdd.

If you still have trouble, the roms maybe incompatible.
