Hacking GW randomly will not save?

I've been playing Link between Worlds, with my new Gateway and I noticed early on the game did not save my progress, later on I noticed if I closed to home menu it would.

Last night I beat a dungeon and same issue, and I'm not sure but I may have launched directly to brain age (if possible, don't remember), or switched to internet browser then quit from there.

Is there a way to for sure avoid this in the future, I thought I may have exited to home menu but I cannot remember. Is this the for sure way to avoid progress being lost?

Always close the game directly from the home menu. That's when Gateway actually saves your savegame.

Didn't they introduce "real time" save with one of the many updates? Where it would actually save it once something gets written to the save file?

1. GW does not support RTS.
2. ALWAYS exit to game menu, than hit HOME and A.
3. Save goes from GW memory to SAV file on SD card.
