Or do you just happen to "know how they work" ?

The clones have their JTAG pins on the back, the Gateway not. Even if it is only possible over JTAG, where are the JTAG pins of the Gateway then?

They are exposed to the SLOT1 pins of the 3DS. Therefore , in theory signals can be sent to those through code running on the 3DS (an ARM9 payload presumably)

I don't know enough about the interface used by SLOT1 to know which traces the pins translate to. However it seems likely that it's been designed with updating/reprogramming in mind.
