srs post in eof rite?
But yeah, my long in-the-running and critically acclaimed series of basic and often incorrect game impressions is back, this time in the EoF because we still don't have goddamn blogs. This time, it's a crop of recent Vita games I played: Gravity Rush, Uncharted: Fight for Fortune, and Retro City Rampage.
So first is Gravity Rush. It's a cute game. Not cute in the pedophile way, I mean that it's pleasant and enjoyable. It's kinda like a Pixar movie or a good cartoon. It's not gonna make a profound impact on you but it's a crowd pleaser. The mechanics are interesting, the game is fun, the art is fantastic. I'd say it's worth getting into. I decided to try out Playstation Plus for it so yeah it's probably worth it along with the other PS+ entry on my list.
Next is Uncharted: Fight for Fortune, the card game. I played the demo first to learn the basics of the game and see if it was worth it. For $5, I'd say it's a good game. The card game is rather original. Basics of the game are that you play Faction cards (either Heroes, Villains, or Mercenaries), the equivalent of monsters or creatures in most TCG, and use them to attack your opponent's life total. You also take Reward cards which you can either cash immediately for Fortune, your "mana" used to play cards, or you can put it on your creatures in the hopes they'll be able to cash it for a larger amount. However, if a creature you control is defeated with a reward card, your opponent gets that reward, so it's a risk vs. reward type of thing. There's also power up cards that will increase your cards attack or defense that require Fortune to play. I'd say my only complaint is that it's a bit plainly presented, there's no voice acting or anything (not even excerpts from the games) and the universe is a bit stretched thin (they have multiple riffs of Nathan Drake such as a fat version of him and a muddy version of him). Still, it's a fun $5 card game that gives a bit more life to Golden Abyss as well.
And my top contender for these three is Retro City Rampage. Hadrian did a review of it some time ago and enjoyed it. But since Hadrian is a RETRO HIPSTER I was a bit wary personally. A lot of the game is reliant on references but if you get them, it's all quite funny. Within the first five minutes of the game you'll be met with references from The Dark Knight, Duck Hunt, Dr. Who, and Back to the Future. The references shouldn't be too hard for anyone with a basic knowledge of entertainment. It's not just video games though, so don't go in there expecting to get everything for being the "ultimate game nerd" who watches no movies. Still, the game is quite fun. It plays like a top-down GTA (I haven't played GTA I or II but it reminds me a bit of a retro Chinatown Wars). There's a variety of fun challenges to do, usually involves vehicles or weapons, all with leaderboard support. The story missions are also crazy fun. One mission had me running through a guarded facility, fighting Bionic Commando, and using Sonic's shoes to escape. It's just that kind of game. I'd say it's well worth $15 (or a 3-month PS+ fee) for whatever platform you choose.
So that's that. We could use blogs back.
