Got Switch Online?

Nintendo's Online service launched last week for Switch, and we would like to know how many of you have signed up!

Please answer the poll and comment on what you think of Nintendo's new paid Switch Online service.

Good times.
MW3 uses Activition's servers btw, which brings me back to my earlier question: Does a player-to-player online service still cost money in terms of server costs?
Then how do people still play Wii (most Mario Kart Wii) online? Does somebody pay for servers?

Some dude runs a Mario Kart Wii server from his house free of charge, also supports smash bros and a few other games, it's called Wiimmfi.

If some one can do it from their house for free, Nintendo, a billion dollar company could easily of kept it free, no excuses

Do MS and Sony provide all their servers on their systems? I don't think so. But why would companies like Activision be ok with excluding players for not paying money to MS/Sony/Nintendo? It can hurt their game sales by reducing the fun people have with their games and not paying for online gaming.

i love how people are constantly trying to justify paid online because of "server hosting fees"...
online on PC has been free for how long? just because it's a PC doesn't mean there's no server upkeep costs. hmmmmmm

MMOs like WoW are the only valid examples, but even then you can cheap out and not pay if you grind hard enough

No - paying for peer-to-peer connections is pointless.
  • Server costs can be easily offset with the cut Nintendo makes off of eshop sales alone.
  • We were warned it would be a paid system when they initially announced it, but they also said we wouldn't have friend codes any more.....so it isn't completely out of place to think things could change (especially with all the delays they had).

It's so funny when people justify it with is only $20! Microsoft and Sony charge $60... When the switch only has like 2 or 3 online worth games...

Mario Kart
Splatoon
And?...

Man, $60 for Gold or PS Plus is a much better deal.

Can we agree that peer to peer should be free on MS and Sony devices as well? If 60$ is a good deal, fine. But they shouldn't force everyone to get in on it by limiting simple online play for those who don't find the deal convincing.

I have a question about Switch online

What happens if you don't play your Switch for more than 7 days when you have Switch online?

I read a lot of things here on nintendo online
1/ saying that to play online it costs 20 dollars is not true, what happens if I don't pay my monthly internet subscription of 32$? I no longer have internet at home, no more TV channel, and of course no internet access at nintendo
So 32X12= $384 + 20= $404 is what it really costs me to play online for 1 year
Can you tell me that's normal? No in France the tv was free, and from the internet we pay taxes and duties for the tv fee (mandatory in France) unless we can prove to the state that your household does not have tv.
The TV fee in France is a tax that is placed in the housing tax ( the right to live in your house)
So you also pay a minimum of $500 a year in housing tax and in it you have $120 that is given to the TV channels (to do their bullshit shows that cost millions of dollars to more than 64 million French households.

So since the internet era everything is more expensive, nintendo makes you pay 20$ per year it's one thing, but don't really forget what you're paying next door to be able to do it, that is to say to play online on nintendo
Do you want to talk to your friends? Do you buy a tablet (it's offered by nintendo if you use it for chat?) bullshit
All I see is shit, how much does it cost me to have 4 friends come to my house and play multiplayer locally on my couch?
No criticism is made about the quality of nintendo online servers or features, that's not the goal here, just to say that in france internet is paying, and I pay 384$ per year for that, and I'm tired of paying things that were free or cheaper before, how much did the switch cost me?
Small calculation
329 (switch) + screen protector + grip case skull + sfc controller 30pro + 8bit do dongle + skyrim 60€ + zelda
600$ the switch + accessories
384$ (1 year internet subscription)
And finally I have to pay $20 for the nintendo service
Plus the tax on housing tax + TV royalty 500$

So I actually spend that every year to be able to play.
384€ inernet /+500€ taxe tv /+20 ( nintendo online) = 904€ Either( 1060.87112 USD )
This is the reality in France in 2018

1. i want to backup my local saves which is only possible with homebrew, which makes online a nogo
2. I don't care about online-multiplayer and online NES Titles and Online-DLC-Stuff.

You can't do that on Switch?
The Gamecube did not allow backup safe files of certain games (Fire Emblem, F-Zero).
The Wii did not allow backup save files of games with online features.
But on Wii U u can make backup safe files of EVERY game. But not on Switch?

No, only possible by homebrew so far. (EdiZon or Checkpoint)

Nintendo only provides you cloud saves, and even that you need to pay for.

At first they (Ninty) deleted saves the moment your subscription expires but they got enough backlash that they're keeping your cloud saves for up to 180 days.

On the Gamecube you could save your files to the memory card which is equivalent to storing at local and i bet there where memory cards with an micro-sd-slot available where you could pull an image from the micro-sd card.
Especially for F-Zero GX everything has been stored on the memory card aswell as the custom cars.

Didn't the Wii stored the saves on its SD-Card aswell as the Wii U?

I mean, Nintendo is scared that something like Twilight Exploit might happen again, thats why they won't give us our Local Save feature on the Switch...

And about the local Backup - nothing is more frustrating then loosing a Gamesave where you have put lots of time in it...

Wow, I didn't know all save files are cloud-based.
So if sb doesn't pay for their online service, how will the save data work?
Or is it saved locally, you "just" can't access it?

Nintendo Switch Online: Say goodbye to cloud backups if you stop your subscription
While the Nintendo Switch Online is due to be launched tomorrow, bad news for those who plan to subscribe, but don't know if they will keep their subscription. Indeed, if it is a question of allocating storage space to subscribers in the cloud so that they can save the progress in their games without cluttering their machine's memory, it would seem that once their subscription expires, all the data becomes inaccessible. Information that is better known in advance, so that you can manage your backups accordingly and avoid an unfortunate loss of games.

I played Zelda Mario and Octopath. I have no interest in even modding it as there's not enough games to warrant it. Wake me when there's another game worth playing.

It's saved by cloud iirc.
But the moment your subscription expires you can't access it. Might as well use Checkpoint so I guarantee I don't lose my save data.

If you aren't subscribed then it's saved locally, but it can only be accessed by homebrew tools like Checkpoint or EdiZon.

I got it to play Splatoon. It's only "6$" per year.

I do have to agree it's a POS service and big N should be ashamed of releasing it like this, but a man gotta splat.
