dont reformat you computer!!!!!!

run combofix to remove the malware. it only takes 10 minutes. disable your anti virus and re-open it after combofix is finnish.

download from bleepingcomputer. search it.

dont do anything while combofix is scanning

scan your computer after combofix to see if anythig appears. if anything appears as infected, post that portion here.

Might try Malwarebytes or something. Right now it seems to be only W32.Sality that's on the computer so I might be able to remove it myself.

Should I use HijackThis or something?

HijackThis is not a virus removal tool its really only useful for removing key registry entry's such as Browser Helper objects and startup entries!

use Malware Antibytes along with Spybot Search And Destroy and a good antivirus program!

note pad should be located by default in XP in C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE if there are any other instances of notepad then its not notepad its the virus masquerading as notepad exe file!

remember once you have got rid of it to flush all your restore points by disabling them and then renabling them if the virus has got into a restore point chances are if you restore it will restore the virus too!

Symantec have a full walkthrough how to remove it here

Symantec make nortan and other removal tools!

Run HiJackThis to remove all suspicious entries. (but be VERY careful about what you get rid of)

Run MalwareBytes AntiMalware to clean up most of the infected files

Run a decent antivirus program (maybe Avira Antivirus free?)

If you wanna be sure, use combofix to clean up anything that is still somehow lingering.

If your internet is broken, use LSPFix (and maybe ResetTCIP.msi from microsoft) to fix your internet.

This combination will fix nearly ANYTHING
