I got a really good deal on a new Nintendo Switch from WallyWorld and I ended up with a Switch with the following serial number: XAW100858XXXX ... it's on 4.1.0

My options are:

a) Flip and spend money OOP for a Switch from eBay (higher chances)

b) Keep Switch and wait for next hack to be released

Grad school starts in a few weeks, so clearly I won't be playing the Switch that often either -- so it would be easy to resist the urge to play any games until Dec/Jan. Of course, no one knows when the next exploit will be released, but I'm just using that as an example.

Thoughts?

Well the first option is faster but more expensive, and if you keep your patched switch, there is no telling how long it will it take to be hacked, I would go with the first option, I hope you will find a buyer who wants a non-exploitable switch, and a seller with a exploitable switch in good condition, I just made it in time my self two months ago, my switch was on 4.0.0 so barely, good luck.

If you can afford it keep it and buy a second switch one.
One you dont have to worry about with cfw, and then one without for all online access.

I would try and find an unpatched unit quickly before the return window closes or flip it. There is just no guarantee an exploit will be found and released.

I'm in the same boat as you.

You could send your Switch to Team Xecuter. They were looking for someway to mod the new patched units and needed some hardware. I think they said they'd exchange anyone who does with a non-patched unit. However, I wouldn't want to do that, so I don't expect you to want to do that either. Who knows, maybe they're not even accepting any more.

If I was in your shoes, I'd just wait until the next hack is released. If you ever get any extra money to blow however, I would do what Cha0tic suggested, and buy a second Switch exclusively for online play.

Word on the streets is that they wait for Mariko to be released, instead of releasing all exploits now. Makes sense.

Patched units are said to be software and Marikos supposed to be hardware revision. Guess it doesn't hurt to wait just in case.

Yes, just in case the current undisclosed attacks still work on Mariko. Never use all your bullets at once until you have to :)

Worse comes to worse comes to worse, there are more than 15 millions Switch on this planet with the original flaw... Not really a limited edition :)

Original 210 Tegra chip has more than 10 known / more or less disclosed vulnerabilities, let's see how it goes with the 214 chip in Mariko when it is out!

I would have already gotten a refund at walmart and looked elsewhere. Maybe check the serial number first next time before you check out.

Or since it sounds like you aren't going to play that much, just buy the games.

I don't see why everyone thinks that the unhackable switches will always remain that way.
I don’t think everyone thinks that. At the same time I don’t see why anyone knows with absolute certainty that the ipatched Switches will be hackable.

Thank you for all the replies.

To answer a few questions,

1) I bought this online (admittedly, I wasn't thinking properly and was hoping I'd get lucky).

2) I scored a really good deal. If I return it, I'm essentially losing out on the deal.

3) I might go the eBay/Amazon 3rd party route. I'd prefer not getting a used device (hence the question). I know there are a ton of hackable Switches out there, but I'd prefer a new one versus something used. The only issue is that I won't be doing much playing until vacation time, hence I don't see the value of buying two switches. Admittedly, the only reason I got the Switch was because of the price - otherwise, I would have passed.

I've also modded all Nintendo devices that I've owned, so I'd like to keep with that tradition (I do purchase games btw, it's not about the piracy).

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.
