The gateway works perfectly. I was just wondering if I can go online AND NOT UPDATE, just to add my friends and swapnote.

As long as I don't update while I'm online I'm fine right?
I've used the browser with my 4.5 Gateway and I haven't been asked to update yet. I haven't done any kind of friend things though, so I'm not sure about that part.

Normally, the 3DS automatically downloads firmware updates whenever it's connected to the Internet. The Gateway exploit may disable that, but I'm not sure. I wonder if Nintendo has some way of seeing if you're using a flashcard while online?

Something I'd like to know is if it's safe to play Mario Kart 7 online before or after the Gateway exploit. Normally, does the 3DS download firmware updates only at the system menu and in sleep mode, or does it download 'em even while playing a legit cart online?

I have too and it never said anything. Trying to run a Gateway game with a valid internet connection and the Wifi turned on seemed to lrevent the game from loading.

I always turn my wifi on after the game is launched, so I've never encountered that. I'll have to try doing so and see what happens.

I would go into Gateway mode with internet options set up and the Wifi switch on and it would either freeze at the 3DS logo and continue infinitely or the black screen after that. I ended up having to run the Gateway installer again and delete my internet settings to fix it.

Nevermind, you scared me away from trying it, lol. You should try messaging Gateway about it. Maybe they can fix it.

Just so you guys know, I am connected to WIFI and use the browser from time to time. Literally the first day I got it. Anyways, I just added a buncha friends from another site today and I'm still on 4.4 so I'm not sure it can be updated without my permission? BTW I decided to grab some balls and see what it'd be like to press software update. So I turned wifi on and update and it began so I turned the thing off as soon as I noticed there was no password before updating. It never updated, still 4.4.

First off, can they update us without our permission?

Second, can I set a password to prevent someone updating without the password?

It didn't harm anything xD I don't blame you for not wanting to try it. It's not exactly a problem now as you can't use online in games, I had just used the browser before and wondered why my games wouldn't load.

It always asks if you want to update though with a yes or no option so I'd assume no but not 100% sure.

Unless parental controls let you do that probably not.

From what I've read, in the ToS, EULA, or whatever, it says they have the ability and right to update you without permission. I don't think they've ever done it before, but now that Gateway's going to spoof current firmware, they may end up using it. And I know the parental controls can prevent going online, but I'm not sure if they can prevent updating as well. It's possible.

Gateway mode disables all forms of updating through the internet so you can safely connect without any issue. You'll not be able to go on the eShop yet. StreetPass works great even with other devices that are higher (me and a friend on 6.3 StreetPassed without any issue).

If you want to update to 4.5 you can buy a game like Animal Crossing that requires 4.5 and has NAND saving and it'll update to 4.5, or you can use Gateway firmware 1.0. As that one doesn't disable updating or spoof the firmware, and if you use a game with that Gateway 1.0 firmware that requires 4.5 (like SMT IV, Luigi's Mansion 2 and some others, Google it) it'll prompt you to update to 4.5, and update to 4.5 without any issues. I did this to get my 4.2 3DS to 4.5.

Updating to 4.5 is not really necessary though unless you just like being at the highest firmware available (and I guess that's firmware the Gateway team bugtest on mostly so it should be the most stable one, even though I didn't have any problems on 4.3 at all).

According to Wikipedia:

So no, it didn't.
