Call me stupid, but I do not even understand this. I'm serious.

Since consumer printers, especially inkjets, are garbage right from factory on (my ink printer with CD/DVD printing function failed right after warranty expired – some coincidence, huh) it might be worth a try looking at used printers from an formally upper price range.
Might be troublesome with drivers if using modern Windows, but generally old laser printers are neigh indestructible

IIRC Brother printers don't deal with this bullshit. Alternatively get a second hand one, I use an older HP printer and just buy cartridges.

In terms of consumer printers, AFAIK they're all optional.

Although you may want to be careful with ones that lock out third party ink/toner or just get the ink tank systems.

The ones I'm aware of basically act as an alternative to just buying ink/toner.

Years ago I had HP Instant Ink which gave me about 50 pages per month.

It has it's swings and roundabouts because it meant I could print full page colour without worrying about how much ink I was using, however, it also meant I had to be careful with what was being printed e.g. pages with a single line of text.

People have made mistakes with these though, mainly thinking that they can still use the ink after they cancel the plan, which whilst on the surface wasteful makes sense from a business stand point and it was clear to me from the start what I was paying for.

It does also require the printer to be connected to the internet.

Note: I haven't been subscribed for a few years due to price rises making it no longer worthwhile.

I have a brother hl-2350dw mono laser printer. Does me fine, 0 trouble. Had it a couple of years, never given me any trouble, haven't had to change the toner yet.

So I vote for whatever is the cheapest brother printer that fits what you want.

I think Brother is the main brand nowadays that doesnt require a subscription and provides drivers for OS other than Windows.

Not everyone prints a massive amount of paper these days, some subscriptions cover ink cartridges and paper every month such as hp. It's not overly expensive $10 a month gets you about 50 prints. Some people go to the library and get charged 10c a page to print.
