I want something that's not region locked and can ideally do 4K [just HD is fine, too]. Any recommendations?

Look for which drives have LibreDrive support in MakeMKV.
It will allow for UHD ripping and remove riplock (speed throttling).

There aren't many manufacturers of optical drives left. Supposedly Pioneer on low firmware versions perform well, but I'm happy with my cheaper LGs as well. :)

Very well said.

I've had my LG blu-ray burner since mid 2011 and it has never failed me, and I burn and rip a lot of shit. I think the better question would be, what blu-ray burner SOFTWARE is best for such and such (your needs). I use DVDFab 12.0.8.1, and it is a MONSTER suite of apps that can do pretty much anything with a Blu-ray or a DVD. File conversions, ripping, Blu-ray & DVD cloning, this puppy does it all. Look it up! ;)
