I've just setup Genesis Plus and am attempting to play Sonic The Hedgehog. When I hold down and press A, B, or C, sonic only jumps. Not a single button makes him start spinning. I thought it might be a controller issue but this works just fine in Sonic 2. I've tried three different Sonic roms and there is no change. Is this a game bug or does Sonic just not spin in the original game?

Spin dash was introduced in Sonic 2, although you can download a hacked ROM where someone has added this ability into Sonic the Hedgehog. Check romhacking.net.

sonic doesn't spin on the first game for genesis...

however if you run fast and press down, he will "spin" so you can access some "secret areas" and kill monsters

There are hacks of sonic 1 that adds the spindash feature in them so check those out if you can.
