Hacking General flash card question

Hi, i am kinda new to DS.

I have been reading a lot up on different flash card solutions.
What i have understood, is that you can buy a DS from any retailer and use a flash card like m4 without flashing any firmware on the ds?

That's right.

Get:
1. Retail Nintendo DS
2. R4/M3 Simply AND a microSD memory card.

or

2. Any other flash cart of your choosing.

Flashing your DS is not neeed in either case except if you'd like to download play and your DS is the receiving one.

What exactly is download play? is that when only one of the DS's have the game, and sends it to another?
Will normal multiplayer work between two ds's with flash cards?

Download play is when you send a demo or play multiplayer with only one flashcart. Flashcards arent very good at download play(CycloDS looks promising though,buy it after its been reviewed here). Normal multiplayer will work fine
