What does it do?

It replaces the GD-ROM drive in a Dreamcast with small board with a USB port on that emulates the drive and looks to USB for its images. There is also a similar one called GDEMU that uses SD cards instead of USB.

GDEMU (SD Card Replacement) costs about 55 € on Aliexpress and do the same.

The regular DC Games have between 700 mb up to 1.2 GB (GD Rom).

400gb confirmed working tho im hilariously using only about 8gb off of it. LOL

nor the usb gdrom nor the gdemu have a 100% compatibility. vast majority of games work no problem but there are one offs here and there that dont work afaik

I’ve got the card version, don’t know how I lived without it They’re a great alternative to just burning discs to protect your originals.

Is it true that the SD card version has some performance issues? I'm not sure which is the better option between SD/CF/IDE.

I haven't run into any performance issues at all. Just one game not working, Unreal (USA) the pal version works well but it doesn't have an online mode.
