Welcome to the 36th issue of the GBAtemp Recommends Revival Project! This project is a weekly feature where we share our favorite games and applications with you. The things we recommend may be "old school" titles, a Homebrew, a ROM hack, sleeper hits, an application, etc, but one thing's for certain, we think they are fantastic and deserve your attention!

ActRaiser was released for the SNES in 1991 by Enix and incorporated a mixture of strategy-simulation, action-platforming, and RPG-like experiences.

Players assume the rule of The Master who awakens fully healed hundreds of years after being defeated by The Evil One known as Tanzra. The world has been divided and is now ruled over by 6 of Tanzra’s lieutenants, who have turned a majority of the population to evil. Upon returning to this world The Master and his angel sidekick visit each of the 6 lands and begin to purge them of evil. Slowly the population is healed, cared for, taught to build shelter and grow crops, and in return they once again start to worship The Master thus providing him with a renewed source of power.

Each of the lands provides a similar experience of play. They begin with a graphically rich action-platforming experience. During these experiences The Master inhabits a warrior statue, which the player controls until reaching the end of each area. Once reached The Master returns to the clouds and the game switches to a strategy-simulation city-building experience. The player now controls the angel who aids The Master in clearing the land with the help of natural elements such as lightening, earthquakes, rain, wind, and sunlight. The population is then instructed to build roads, construct houses, grow crops, and eventually to seal the sources of evil. After a final platforming stage is conquered the land is free from evil. The player will then advance to the next infected area of the world and after completing similar sequences face off against The Evil One himself.

ActRaiser merged different aspects of gaming into a package that offered just enough from each area to feel adequately complete. Graphically, the game was an exceptional title that showcased many possibilities of the SNES, including Mode-7 graphical effects. In addition, the incorporated musical score by Yuzo Koshiro demonstrated a new potential for video game composition.

The game sold roughly 620,000 copies world wide, yet it has managed to slip under the radar of many modern gamers due to its odd mix of gaming elements. If you have never given ActRaiser a try, now is the time, we recommend it!

Actraiser (the first one) is a very good game, one of the few games I've completed (twice) back on snes era.
Though the first level may discourage players to continue due to difficulty and bad control, and they don't even see the sim/populous part.

I liked the mixed plateform/simulation.
The music are also very good (I still listen to ActRaiser Symphonic Suite album regularly).

The game has few bugs, I had to replay from the start after being blocked in the simulation mode for hours : The peoples never invented the bridge. I couldn't do anything else than restart a new game. On my second play through it worked just fine and quick.

If you never played it and like Real time strategy/sim/plateform/action, then I recommend it :)

I tried Actraiser 2 many times, but I couldn't like it as much as the first one.

Heh, I loved this game, to the point where I would just waste time in it for no reason. I remember purposely destroying homes so that more efficient ones would be built in their places, maximising population as much as I could.

I wonder what a modern reboot/remake would be like.

IN ANCIENT TIMES
THERE EXISTED A LEGEND
OF ONE MANWOMANTHING
THAT CAN SAVE THE WORLD
(insert flashes of scary monsters)
FROM THE GREATEST EVIL
(insert flashes of bosses)
IT HAS EVER FACED

New, Actraiser: Rebootifiedmade! Explore a huge overworld, with (insert number here) quests! Fight monsters, with a sword and maybe some magic if you can figure the controls out! Wonder aloud why the trees are moving as you chop off the heads of monsters!

oh I remember this one. the OST was fantastic!

the strange mix between platform and city simulation works great in this game
sadly they drop the sim aspect for the sequel

I guess if you came here to this thread, you are old like me xD

This was an awesome game. I caught wind of it after looking up a couple of top 10 lists last year, and never regretted the tens of hours playing it then

I remember playing this game and struggling to defeat some of the bosses, just to have to defeat all the bosses again in one level.

I'm sure savestates makes it a lot easier.

@K3Nv2 Snow Day is pretty fun. My only bitch would be the camera controls, when you move around, say down, you have to move the right stick left or right to get camera to turn and get your view, other than that I like it so far.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
From what people say pvp isn't even worth it
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I just been playing offline, and they give you a few bots here n there on your team to help battle. I don't think it's as funny as the other games tho, more battle oriented than humor, which kinda sucks, but I'm still early in it
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@BigOnYa, doesnt the game have a campaign mode?
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea, and co-op, but you can also start a pvp session and battle just with friends. You get special skill cards (powers) the more you play. And higher value cards, but you can only enable so many cards at a time.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
If you can find enough for it
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Toilet paper is considered the money, you collect and buy stuff with TP, kinda funny. Graphics are def better than the other games tho, I think they used Unity 5 engine.

I bet most people at the time still watched it in black and white
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Many of them did before colour television was common.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Likely because black and white TV was in-expensive.

  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
It certainly wasn't inexpensive it cost the same as a new car back then
