Hacking GBA dust cover led mod

I Found this great mod ( http://www.consolepimps.com/Nintendo_DS/DS_Slot.php ) for putting LEDS in the dust cover but i have a few questions

1. will 5mm LEDS be a suitable size?

2. Do i have to use a conductive pen? (20 bucks for a one time mod is a bit much for me)

3. Is this a mod with a low Risk? (I love my ds and if there's a reasonable chance something could short circuit i don't wanna chance it)

You dont need a conductive pan, just the regular soldering stuff. You dont need to fiddle about the way that guy did it either, just solder to the gba contacts, as long as you keep it high enough and thin enough it wont interfere with the regular workings of the port.

I did this very thing a few years back with a GBA cart...

Thanks spinal cord, that is much more clear than the diagram i was looking at before. one problem though in your diagram you use the right and left most contacts, yet on the link i was looking at the solder was done at a different point that was connected to contacts at a different position...

From what i know whenever the cover is in your ds and your ds is powered on the LEDs will glow
(it uses the power from the ds's battery)
