Oh wow. Looks like my $50-$100 prediction was right.

how would they do that?

Nintendo can do a lot more with the 3DS than they could with the older consoles. The flashcart blocking updates (especially the one that pretty much blocked all R4 variants) involve Nintendo adding a check if a cartridge has a certain part it shouldn't have or is known to only be used in a flashcart. The same will probably be done for this unit.

As I've said before with the online stuff: Nintendo has proven they can block units from playing online with the Mario Kart v1.1 patch on the eShop. To access the eShop you have to be running the latest system update. Thus, even if they don't fully block the cart from playing offline(doubtful) you won't be playing online.

It remains to be seen, but they could probably even go nuclear and require a firmware update to play online with all games, which would save them time and hassle. I wouldn't even be surprised if each individual cartridge has a serial number that they could check and ban if they notice everyone using a ROM dump from a certain group.

Okay so will I be able to load a different game to the same sd card later on let's say once you finish playing one game instead of buying another sd card... Can I just reformat and put a diff game
On it...? Which leaves to the other question.. Can I back up my game with the save file and later on just put it back into an sd card if I want to play it again?

"We are currently working to fully support back up and restore of save data."
They answered that when the question is if will be able to save progress in a game... I mean that's what I'm gathering that they are working on a way for it to be able to save the game am I wrong?

If I can't save my game nor be able to back it up well that would be a disappointment. Or if moving the save file from the sd card corrupts the game...

:(

Edit: If I can't use the same sd card for other games then that's okay I guess not a big deal. I plan to play a game one by one I'm not going to be carrying sd cards around... And not know which has what game. So it'll be easier this way IMO.

Another thing I noticed is they said "Yes some aspects of the design will be upgradable." Just design? By asking if its upgradable I was expecting something along the lines "yeah will work on an update/patch if Nintendo blocks it..." But I understand this is different than a Ds cart but still that means no updates ever as of what I'm gathering ! And no warrantee of there being any either (at least not that we know now)

>_<

$80 is too much. <$50 and I'll grab one.

By that time, who knows, maybe some clones of it will be out. Fine by me.

(Why? Cause when the multi-rom support gets going, I'm going to want like a 64gb microSDHC card, that's gonna add another $42.99 to the price, and I want to keep a total of under $100.)

Another question that came to mind just now.

Since we can't update the systems to avoid the card getting blocked...
Let's say pokemon x or y requires an update.... And let's say the rom is available online soon enough. Would we need to update with the rom as well? :s since its a 1:1 clone I'm just wondering how it works...

Hmmm.

Correct.

Which is the main point of other peoples arguments that it'll be useless once newer games come out with a newer firmware (That blocks the Gateway 3DS.) Since it's a 1:1 rom dump, it would have the update on it. And force the 3DS to update in order to play it.

Are you sure about that? Like is it an actual fact...?
Wow well yeah that's a bummer I mean if every new game needs an update then the card pretty much becomes useless if we cant update to avoid it getting blocked.

Still it's a start.

I think they will find away around the 3DS updates in the newer games & anti pircy patches so i'm not worried at all .

Yep, that is what I am thinking too, Nintendo is NOT stupid..they know that many people dont go online with their 3DS..so they will just put in a mandatory update on the game itself forcing people to install it..its ridiculous to spend 80 bucks on something that Nintendo can block in a week tops..for 30 bucks it would be worth it, but 80 bucks is pushing it..unless Gateway can update it so that they can counter Nintendo's updates I dont see a way around it

The faq is nice and answers a lot of questions. As exciting as it is though, the reasonable thing to do is to wait for the review here and the first update... That said, I have some graduation money in my pocket :)
