Never read 'official' reviews.
Read several player reviews.
Gamespot is still probably the best site out there for videogame related stuff. Its reviews just suck, as do pretty much any sites.
A quick test is to see what the site gave GTA4. If it got a 9.5 or higher (or equivalent), then the site rates based on how much cash they were given, not by what the game is.
Reading player reviews is easily the best way to do things. You can start to see a middleground after some reviews to get a real idea of what a game is like, and weed out fanboy/hater reviews.
OH, and look up LOZ: Ocarina of Times player reviews on gamespot. You'll fucking LOL at it (it basically gets 10's, and a few 9.5's for about 6 years of reviews...or more, I forget).
Though I didn't actually watch the review at the top, it is fair to say BlazBlue is a piece of shit, and it really sucks it's supposed to be Guilty Gear's 'spiritual successor'. Way to ruin a good series by turning it into utter trash. Oh well. There are other, somewhat similar, games to play instead i s'pose.
