most of the rpg are played by using the top screen, try twewy and soma bringer, chrono trigger maybe, dq?,, i think that's all good non ff franchise rpg i know and in english, there are shitload others in japanesse

Fossil fighter is.... kinda like Pokemon... but you are supposed to resurrect fossils to get your "vivosaurs" to fight

Its really more of turn based rpg.

Have you tried Disgae and Valkyrie Profile too? Pretty nice SRPGs... And Shin Megamin Tensei: Devil Survivor

Well, the only Pokemon RPG games (excluding Pokemon Ranger) are Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, all of which have pretty much the new pokemon.

But Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver are coming out in Spring 2010 (Remakes of Gold and Silver) so if you just wait like half a year, then you can try out those two, which will contain older pokemon.

so then you would be looking for Role Playing Games. Final Fantasy & Dragon Quest would fall into that category

Exceptions: Peggle, Cake Mania, Diner Dash, Magnetica, Picross, Any Sudoku Game, Henry Hatsworth, Big Bang Mini, Professor Layton (all), Rhythm Heaven, Meteos, Zoo Keeper, Planet Puzzel League, Phoenix Wright, Elite Beat Agents, Kirby, Mario vs Donkey Kong, Soul Bubbles, CrossworDS, Cosmo Cops, ScribbleNauts or LEGO Battles.
Other additional info: Small puzzle games would also do fine.

Haven't liked it. I'd prefer something about robos and awesome guns, not the villages and swords.
