Hi there. I posted this same question on Reddit, but it didn't get much attention, so I'll try over here.

If you want to see the original post, it's here

Does anyone know the difference between Wii games with IDs starting with R and S? I gathered R is the older one. But why did it change? It seems to have swapped in 2009 / 10. But what happened for them to want to change the Game IDs? WiiWare didn't change. Virtual console didn't change their naming scheme.

Thanks.

R = Wii Disc. Used for older disc-based games
S = Wii Disc. Used for newer disc-based game _ (Spanish-speaking regions. Only if separate versions exist, e.g. Pokemon Snap)
But why? My point is not that they exist, but rather why did Nintendo decide to change from one to another. Why are disks split into "older" and "newer"?

From a practical standview, they were going to run out of letters and numbers. 36x36=1296, at the end of its lifetime the Wii had more than 1500 games available.
