Vastly superior.
If only it were just that simple. Mediaplay-Extend has significant enhancements of its own. For instance, you can play MP3s while viewing pictures or reading text files. The textviewer itself is also way better, with better formatting and dual screen support including a vertical mode where you hold the DS just like a real book. Mediaplay-Extend also just has a way nicer interface, especially the fact that many of the setting can be changed from pull down menus rather than Moonshell's INI file that can only be modified by connecting your flash cart to a computer. Also, Mediaplay-Extend works fully with the G6, which means you can exit back to the G6 menu and save bookmarks and stuff.

On the other hand, Moonshell has advantages, too, as you point out, like the better DPG playback and more formats supported and so on.

Personally, I wish the G6 team would update Mediaplay-Extend using Moonshell 1.6, but I don't thik that's gonna happen unfortunately. Luckily, movie playback isn't very important to me, so I don't feel the need to keep both Moonshell and Mediaplay-extend on my G6. Moonshell, does handle pictures better, but I guess I can live without that.

...word is bondage...

Thank you for the clarification Sweater Fish.. I use Mediaplay Extend primarily to read books with. I do the "hold it like a book" thing and love it that way. Until Moonshell proper adds that function, I'll just stick with Mediaplay, and hope they do update it one fine day.

I couldn't find a way to exit back to the NDS menu with the latest Mediaplay Extend.

You can do it with your stylus on the main media window (the one listing files). Tap your stylus in the upper left hand corner and pick the second to last option in the menu. I'm not sure what it says since I have a chinese version

but it will get you back to the main ds menu.
