What is the best movie converter (preferable freeware) for converting DVDs to be played fullscreen on the PSP?
If there are no good converters to do this, are there any homebrew media players that can play fullscreen movies?

Any video converter can do this, and watching the movies threw the psp menu is fine, just change the viewing mode to full screen when watching the movie

I've always used Xvid4PSP for all my conversions ever.
Don't be fooled by the name, it can do H.264 with MP4 and AAC, and you can customize most of the settings. Also many other formats and presets.
I also use this for my Xbox360, convert a bluray movie 720p to mp4 and put the result on a USB memory and play.

5.0.37.5 r25 is the most recent one.

Not sure if direct linking works:

i use pspvc (requires .net framework) and converting takes quite a while even with a 700mb .avi rip... like you could watch it faster!

I use MediaCoder it has a built-in option solely for the PSP.
You need to go Feature>Ui Plugins>Game Consoles>PSP.
Works dandy for me.

I use PSPVC as well, seems simpler for me, lots of presets as well. Also does styled softsubs in MKV containers, dunno if XviD4PSP does that.

Converting to x264/AVC will take a long, long time. Times mainly depend on your CPU and RAM. More cores means a faster re-encode, if you have an i5/i7 that's even better.
