i think it's best to keep 1 slot open so you can challenge someone who isn't in your friendlist.

i also think there should be an exception for this game's friendcode database entries.
i think it should have 3 entries:
zerker, saurian and ninja.
instead of zerker X ninja, and zerker X saurian.

because the game has 3 versions.
