Hacking Freezing occurrence after using 'Sleep Mode'

Some SD cards mount faster than others and any form of substantial delay when mounting may cause errors. The 3DS isn't used to such delays, its NAND is directly accessible and so are the cartridges, SD's are a whole different story. If your SD card unmounts during sleep mode or has some form of a power saving function that causes it to enter its own "sleep mode" when it's not accessed for an extended period of time, the 3DS will treat this behaviour as erroneous and freeze. That, or your SD is simply too slow. I suggest using a different SD card again (preferably of higher class, maybe a different brand) and testing whether that makes a difference.

Hi there Foxi4, are you saying that my red card is not faulty? If so, I'll try getting another SD card, what worries me is that, the freezing will happen again and I'll waste money on that SD card..

I don't think the red card is faulty, I'll sooner put the finger of blame on your SD card. What brand and class is it? If you have to spend extra just to get another one, perhaps you should investigate the issue further before making rash purchases. Maybe there's someone who could lend you an SD?

I'd also like to point out that I'm not just talking about the SD card in your red card, I'm also talking about the one in your 3DS. It is my understanding that EmuNAND is located on the 3DS' SD card, if that one's too slow then it might cause problems too. Have you tried replacing that one? Does the freezing also occur when you're using EmuNAND without the red card inserted?

I would also think its the sd card that is the cause of the issue. I might have to look into mine as well. pny bullshit.

maybe its a bug?

mine froze but it wasn't in sleep mode.
I would boot up emuNAND in gateway mode and then start up Zelda Ocarina of Time and
it would just hang there the only thing that plays is the home menu tune.

I'm using a 4GB Samsung SDHC Class 4, it's actually a free gift that came together when I bought the 3DS(He lost the nintendo's official 2GB so he gave me the 4GB one). The freezing only occurs after I launch the game and play it for maybe 10 minutes or even lesser. Sometime if I get lucky, up to 45 minutes, and it will freeze. I might be getting a 8GB SD class 10 tomorrow, if it still happens, at least I'm able to use it for the camera..

Hi tony, are you also having the same issues as me?

Hi sanin, mine would freeze and hang totally, no sound, and just froze. I need to force shut down the 3DS to be able to start it back. Does it only happen during Zelda OOT or other games?

Here's the steps I'd follow before assuming that the flashcart is faulty:
  1. Format the SD card with Panasonic SD Formatter using Full Format (OverWrite) with Size Adjustment enabled
  2. Trying out a different SD card, perferably a high-class one; repeating Step 1 if necessary
  3. Re-downloading all of the software that was on the cards to make sure that nothing is corrupt
  4. Checking if the pins are all correctly aligned and clean. Sometimes when connections are loose the SD might lose contact with the system, leading to freezing or errors
If the steps above fail to produce satisfactory results, contact the retailer/flashcart manufacturer.

Class 4? Say no more. You need a better SD card, Class 4 is only 4MiB/s, it's a bit slow. You should aim at the highest possible Class available to you. What card's in the Gateway? Is it also low-class like that? The internal card doesn't have to be lightning fast, but the one in the Gateway should.

Hmm I read somewhere that says, the class doesn't really matters, that's why I didn't bother to get the class 10, since I got the class 4 for free. I will get the class 10 tomorrow, and try it out. Does the capacity matters?

The only issue I have is the slow boot up to the Home menu. Every time I boot up it takes a while to come up.
I had the same issue when I tried on my 2nd SD card, when it boots to home menu(SysNAND or EmuNAND), or trying to save during home menu, it took quite awhile. Class 4 SD card too, but the first one reads faster. Anyway, even with the 2nd SD card, the freezing still occurs. I think you should get a new SD card too.

The Class of your SD card is probably the most important factor you should keep in mind, it reflects the minimum and maximum transfer rate. Using a card that's simply too slow can cause a bottleneck in loading etc., I personally always go for the highest class available as I value speed and stability over capacity. Capacity of the card does not matter, SD cards are designed to have the same access time to all sectors, regardless of the total capacity.

I think mine has frozen once or twice during sleep mode, often when left alone for a long time. The Gateway isn't perfect technology by any means and it is also doing things to the hardware and software that the 3DS doesn't expect, so rare glitches can happen.

I see, I'll get a basic one first. Btw, my MicroSD is also class 4, does it affect too?

I read in another forum, going to sleep mode is not advisable but probably it depends on the person? I'm not entirely sure though..

Here's an update. I just bought a new Kingston 8GB SDHC Class 10 and tried two different game(Fantasy Life and Harvest Moon 3D: Lost Valley), got into Fantasy Life for 30 minutes, and it froze again. HM3DLV got me up to 5 minutes, and froze again too. I'm starting to think it's the Gateway Red Card causing the problem..

P/S: My MicroSD(For the red Gateway) is a Kingston 32GB MicroSDHC Class 4.

...why didn't you put a faster card in the red cart as well?

Hi Foxi4, sorry for not updating you. Finally got my hands on a new MicroSD card, a class 10 now (Samsung EVO 16GB Micro SDHC Class 10), and everything works like a charm. No freezes no hang or anything. Thank god it's not because of a faulty red gateway card! :) Thank you to everyone for helping me throughout this problem! :)

P/S: Just let you guys know, my previous SD card and MicroSD card (both are class 4 cards), are legit, genuine and not fakes. I've used both software that let you check to see if the cards are fake or not.

I had a post-sleep mode freeze today. I had my 3DS in sleep mode running emuNAND with the red cart removed (there wasn't anything in the slot, no games running). I opened up the 3DS, put the red cart in, and pressed select to load games. The menu came up, I selected a game, but nothing happened. I waited a little bit and pressed select again and it froze. Both my microSD and SDHC are 32GB class 10, brand new and properly formatted.

Are you still having the problem every time you press the SELECT button? How did you format those cards, using Windows or Panasonic SD Formatter?

So far it just happened once but I've only had my Gateway set up for a day now. The MicroSD was formatted through Windows as SonyUSA's guide directed, while the SD was fully formatted with SDformatter, Nintendo's recommended program.
