On the very, very off chance that your 360 doesn't support the discs, they'll give you a new 360. The cases of this are really slim right now, and the new discs have yet to be widely marketed.

It was probably just a rumor about this change Microsoft will do if your Xbox doesn't support the new Update.
And even in the rumor the % of the not working Xbox was very very low.

I guess you have more chances to go play slot machines and win enough to get one for free.

It wasn't a rumor, it was confirmed awhile back. Microsoft has made it a point to contact everybody with a model that can't read the new discs, and anybody out of the loop (like those that don't have Gold), would just have to make sure to contact Microsoft on their own time.

If Microsoft starts using a product that you will be forced to use in order to continue to play new games on your Xbox 360, they are obligated to replace your 360, or lose a customer completely. One is generally more profitable than the other.

though ms should have really replaced all the rrod 360's with slim's in the first place >_>
