I have no idea what this is but I found it at a yard sale. Does anyone know what it is or where it's from?

Could be for the Master System, seeing as how they use the same plug.
But, I don't know, because the MS doesn't have a start button.
Could also be for atari 2600 or 7800 also because they have the same controller pin setup. 7800 especially makes sense because 3rd parties could have been manufacturing controllers for it around the time of the genesis.
OP, would you mind taking a picture of the back of the controller so we can see manufacturer, id number, etc? Genuinely curious about this

Could be an old pc controller too, I had a card with a serial port that that would fit into. Would make sense for simple 90's pc games. Used it to use Genesis controllers on computer.

Well the Master System II had a "pause" button on the actual console itself. I don't know if it would be possible to wire this up to a controller button or not.

However I think this pad was probably produced a lot later than Master System, or even MegaDrive. The buttons are labelled 'X' and 'square' which are PlayStation era.

Perhaps it's from some cheap Chinese knock-off system?

I am aware, but the pause button acts just for pausing.
But I think it's possible to pause with a controller, I'm not too sure though. I am Brazillian but I was a Nintendo dude lol.

Again, its from a Family Bootleg Console.

Rusia / Brisil / China / Mexico, around many many more places, had this bootleg systems, where the second controller was missing the start and select button, due to following the famicom first diagrams.

This was due to a second controller had a Microphone on it.

The Sega / Playstation remarks, are due these systems still in production ;D

Never seen one of these before.
Most "famiclones" we have here follow the PS1's design with all four face buttons.

Not all clones are only from famicon, sega had their job done also, on Russia, the 8bit and 16 bit still have a HUGE market. no to mention the HUGE ENORMOUS boptleg and homebrew games on the family.
