Loopy simply coded a firmware that looks like the official firmware.
His hbfirmware and someone else's FWNITRO are custom, but FlashMe is indeed a modified form of the original firmware. Like arctic_flame mentioned, loopy himself has admitted as much.

EDIT:
QUOTEFirst, how do I make NO$GBA display that menu? Thats cool.
Either download loopy's firmware.nds file at http://home.comcast.net/~olimar/DS/firmware.nds or do the following:
1. obtain your DS's firmware and BIOS files, naming them firmware.bin, BIOSNDS7.ROM, and BIOSNDS9.ROM
2. Set no$GBA to load the GBA BIOS before starting the game (in the options menu)
3. Load any DS binary. It will go to the firmware instead. This is faster than running the firmware.nds file, and it uses your own firmware.

How and when was the DS's encryption broken? It was RSA secured and i thought that it would take 300 years for a computer to crack it.
And why isn't somebody working on breaking wii FW encryption using the same method?

There are DLDI-capable BIOS dumpers out there you can use on your own DS. A Google search for "dldi bios dumper" should yield some results you can use.

i think that flashme is not illegal bcuz it is ur ds and u can do anything to it bcuz u bought it. What probably is illegal is playing commercial games. I do believe that some games aren't good enough to buy and also I sometimes feel that the development team did an outstanding job and I should buy the game. Flashcarts can be illegal by how they are used. This is why Nintendo cannot take action against us bcuz we can always use the excuse that we only use the flashcart for homebrew purposes. The firmware on the ds is copy-righted but we are replacing it with a new one. Also we need to place a metal object inside the ds. The new firmware is not copy-righted so we can use with our free will. Placing an object in the ds is also not illegal bcuz u can put anything in your ds and Nintendo will not care. You could put a sticker of spongebob and they wouldn't care. So how is flashme illegal

I had my non stealth flashed ds sent in to Nintendo for hardware repairs and they made a comment about it but they didnt sue me or anything. I dont think they can sue you for flashing your ds even if it is their code because you are not selling it for personal profit.

The download play is encrypted and would take hundreds of years to crack, that's why there is absolutely no homebrew that can send wifi to an unflashed ds. The rest of the firmware might not be encrypted at all.

close but not exact. They could very well sue you for it, but think about the salary they pay their lawyers. It would make much more sense to use those lawyers for a more profitable source. Thats why you really won't get in trouble for pirating unless you go out and proclaim it to the world. Its more profitable for Nintendo to go after the people providing these things, like Roms, rather than going after every single person that downloads them.

On an interesting note, I was able to boot loopy's firmware.nds on my N-Card! For some reason once back in the DS firmware, the DS won't detect the N-card and will show as nothing inserted (don't worry, this only affects the nds file, restarting int the real DS firmware menu, the N-Card still shows up).

But thats not what was interesting for me. I was able to boot a GBA game! (no ,I DID NOT boot a GBA ROM! I had a GBA GAME CARTRIDGE inserted) using this. It booted the DS into GBA mode when I had my pac-man game inserted.

No this won't let you run GBA games from slot-1. This merely tells the DS to boot the GBA slot, nothing more. You'll still need a slot-2 device. So this is still quite usefull if you want to use this to boot your EZFlash 3in1 (if you have a rom in NOR ram, otherwise it won't start it). Now when I do get a slot-2 flash-cart, I can boot it from my N-Card. Yes GBAexploder can do that too, but whenver I feel like just booting the GBA slot without resetting my DS, I can now just use that. Plus I can use it to make settings changes and such.

Loopy's firmware seems to be set to auto boot the GBA slot if there is a gba game/gba bootable slot-2 device inserted. Yay for convenience!

I see no reason why this won't work on other flashcarts as well. So you could put this on a R4/M3/other and use this to get back to your DS menu!

Also, I was able to dump my DS's firmware, but I got a couple of .rom files and .bin file. Sure these will work with some DS emulators, but I want to be able to use the DS's original firmware in the form of an NDS file to boot from my slot-1 flashcart. But alas, I'm stuck with Loopy's version.

There are several GBA frame /gbaframe tools (that was one of the original/most widespread early one though), the 3 in 1 exp pack tool from rudolph should do it (see the gbaframe.bmp part of the docs).

I just grabbed the firmware.nds file from loopy's site, named it firmware.bin, ran a dump of my NDSL's BIOS (with a BIOS dumper), put them in my no$gba folder, and changed the setting to boot GBA BIOS, but when I load a Rom, it crashes. Any reason? Could it be the BIOS is a different version than the firmware?

EDIT: Oh, yeah, that was the problem. I grabbed another dumper, this one also dumped the firmware, so now it works!

An odd thread to reply in but OK.

The DS has a special chip in to change light levels, some later model original style DS have them and all DS lites do.
The original version of V7 did not have this but some beta versions (which you had to choose which version to flash) and a new version (also called V7) had autodetection. Depending on the mirror you use (as the original flashme site went down) you may well only have a version of the original v7.
Grab the relatively recent V8 ( http://home.comcast.net/~olimar/flashme/ ) and all should be fine again, you may well get away without shorting it again.

I've changed versions of V8 on mine several times now, had to short SL1 each time.

Aint that supposed to be the good part of FlashMe on a lite... that it has the recovery code in the 1st part so you HAVE to short to write to it?

FlashMe is technically illegal as we are replacing the firmware of the DS against the wishes of Nintendo.
Heck, you can restore the original firmware without anybody knowing.
But I've done it on my DS Phat and it's still under an EB warranty because it's still in the same condition it was when i bought it.
