Hacking First time gateway use

Ok so I been bothering everyone here for the last week since I got a hackable 3ds again. I got my gateway 3ds last night in the mail and I'm trying to play super smash bros. but it crashes everytime I boot it. From what I understand is that you have to run emunand 8.1 to get it to work but if I format my SD for emu-nand and update it it will update to 9.0.x won't it? How do I update to 8.1 emu-nand again I'm sorry to bother everyone with questions I'm kind-of lost coming from a r4i deluxe

yeah, the super smash bros need the 8.1 system to play, you can use the gateway 3ds to emunand to V8.1 system offline with a rom. check the step by step guide here: http://www.dsflashcart.com/blog/use-gateway-3ds-card-emunand-3ds-firmware-v8-1-0-super-smash-bros/ and also a video about it

You are supposed to not think about a first use can in fact be a gateway to real use... kids today.
