This looks like a nice UI if you have a tablet. I would never want that interface on a desktop.

As intrigued as I am by this, I'd never use this on the pc I'm building :/

Might try the beta (assuming there will be one) on my laptop eventually though.

They've gone the Nintendo route, riding on those cheap gimmicks. Might as well get me a new Mac, then.
Just wait for MacOS X 11 or whatever will be called. It's no secret that Apple is going to fuse both OSes (iOS and MacOS) at some point, since most functionalities of Lion already give away that much.

Microsoft is unsurprisingly going in the same direction. There's a high probablity that ARM will take over the desktop segment too, so they're going to be prepared for it, if that happens.
FUUUUUUUUUUU-

That's it. I have HAD IT with these companies over-simplifying the OS. I understand that Windows has really simplified over the years, but that is just too much.

I'm just gonna stay on Windows 7 until Microsoft does something else.

Well, that article forgot to mention you can turn off the skin, that's the tablet interface which can be turned on or off, and used on desktops with the arrow keys.

Same tablet just with the skin turn off, notice the ribbon

This is the tablet interface for windows 8. Not the desktop interface
I bloody hope so.....

It looks ok for Phones & Tablets, maybe even for a 'media center' pc..... but for a standard desktop - no chance

There's no way I'd would want this for my Home PC - can you imagine having to use the mouse to 'scroll through' those large icons (if you don't have a touch screen) just to get to the one you want ?!?!

. Something tells me that Micro$oft is gonna crank out operating systems like Call of Duty titles... :/

Ok for those that do not know

Windows 8 is created for mobile devices. The PC version will be adapted to desktops
Windows 8 will be released for mobile devices Q2 of 2012 and Q4 of 2012 for desktops

It will have similarities between Windows 7. It will be optimized for use on tablets. This is to go o n a head to head with iOS and Android.

I think its a beautiful product for mobile devices. Desktop... well I hope they adjust it for better use. To be honest Id probably stick with Windows 7 and not upgrade until the OS after Win8

Also stop complaining thats its so soon after the Win7 release.
Google and Apple both churn out OS updates like no tomorrow and considering this is mainly to compete with those 2 its perfectly acceptable for them to launch a new OS
And Q2 of 2012 will most likely be Q4 of 2012 and that means a 3 year gap between 7 and 8... which is pretty normal for Windows and OS X

looks like they totally hijacked the iPad/iPhone interface and used it in their "NEW" system. Honestly I'm still running Windows XP and neither Vista or 7 have offered me any incentive to "upgrade". I'll keep using Windows XP until my next computer no longer accepts it as an OS, even then I highly doubt I'll go to a newer microsoft OS.

People, please step away from your computer. Honestly, read through the entire article. It's a tablet interface on top of the Windows 7 REGULAR desktop, although I'm sure they'll probably end up changing how that looks in the end.

You want icons...YOU GOT THEM and more.

Also, the average release cycle for a Windows OS is 2 years. The only one that did not follow that pattern was XP --> Vista and the reason was they ended up scrapping a lot of the code midway through.

Thank you Jiggah!

And even XP -> Vista was only 5 years so only 2-3 years longer then any other version. And to make up for that Win ME -> XP was only 1 year

Also RchUncleSkeleton... wtf? Hijacked it? Its an interface.
Even if they did rip it off, why is that a bad thing? Obviously Microsoft thought "Wow, users like that interface... lets use it as well so that users can enjoy a good interface with us!" rather then creating something different that might suck.

Also Win 7 has a lot to offer over XP for instance safety and quality

It's not even the same thing as iOS. It's tiles, which is used on Windows Phone 7. The tile interface itself can probably be dated back to Windows Media Center.
