A friend of mine was playing this unpatched on a DS-X. This meant that he could not save, thus, could not turn of his DS. After a week, it finally ran dead (he forgot to plug it in) and he doesn't feel like starting over. I told him about patching it and, short of cheating, I can't figure agood way to get him back where he was.
