Hacking EZIV and GBA cheats

I'm having a headache trying to figure out how to use cheats with GBA games on the EZIV.
Whenever I patch them with .cht files in the EZ4 Client, they don't seem to apply and if I apply them directly using GABsharky they won't even start up.
Could someone please help me with this?
