Alright, I tried out some of your suggestions, and I found these particularly useful:

-Launchy, great keystroke launcher, comes in very handy when searching for files.
-CCleaner, nice app to clean up my hard drive.
-FRAPs, nice program for taking videos.
-Deskpins is quite handy as well.
-Revouninstaller for discarding old programs.

I am also considering replacing my antivirus with one of those mentioned.

EDIT: I will try out some of the media players you guys recommended, but I'm quite skeptical as to whether it would be better than Media Player Classic as it plays nearly any format.

I think that Media Player Classic is the best media player around.
Along with the CCCP, it can play any video.
I find its not heavy on resources either.

My secondary player is VLC media player though.

A few other programs I can't live without:

Irfanview(easy image editing)
Gimp 2.0
Adaware 2007
Spybot S&D
Rocketdock
Lclock
Daemon Tools
WinRaR
Winamp
CCleaner
mIRC

You probably already have all of these but:
7Zip
Alcohol 52%
FCE Ultra
Firefox
Open Office.org
Project64
PSXeven
Thunderbird
uTorrent
Windows Media Center (I know it comes with vista, but I love my DVR)
Yahoo Messenger
ZSNES

I have recently purchased a new hard drive, and I am trying to compile a list of some applications or programs to start me up.

So far I have:

-uTorrent
-Skype
-Firefox
-Media Player Classic
-Combined Community Codec Pack

Yes I know, this list very lacking. Any suggestions as to what programs I should install?

Don't download anything you don't need. If you don't use excel, don't download the whole Openoffice.org package.
If you have to ask random people what to do to your computer, you're doin it wrong

my two cents

I see your point, some of the recommended apps just aren't suitable for me, though I found that most are. However, I didn't give any information as to what particular programs I am interested in because I am just looking for programs in general. I like checking out and exploring new applications regardless of what types they are and due to this I didn't limit any suggestions.

VirtualPC 2007, which by the way is a great way to test out new apps without giving them access to your actual install.
