So my laptop has an eSATA port and I'm wondering if it would work. I've checked and my laptop has a compatible SATA chipset.

As far as I understand they are pretty much the same thing. Remember you still need to power the drive via another means.

There's a list of laptops which esataP ports http://pcsg3.com/esatap.shtml

However my laptop has one of those esata/usb combo ports, and I don't think it does power over sata as it's from 2008.

I have an ESATA port on my laptop and I flashed my 360 with an ESATA to SATA cable BUT I had to follow steps listed here http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=701119 to switch to IDE mode in my BIOS. Without that it wouldnt recognize my dvd drive and is apparently the case for most laptop users (hence why some people think you can't use an ESATA port) but if you use that guys registry files (link lower in the thread) then it works!
