emuNAND is possible without a flashcart, but only classic mode, ie. no ROMs or .cias. Use the MT Card launcher.

I want CFW without Gateway or a DS flashcart

That's too bad? I'm not sure what else you're expecting. If there were a totally free CFW solution that updates to the latest firmware already you'd know about it because half the threads in this forum would be about it. :P

What about the MT card launcher you said, what does that do

You already got your answer, it'll let you run an emuNAND that updates to 9.4, but can't do anything that the standard 3DS firmware can't. If and when something better comes along, you'll hear about it.

So right now my best option is to just get a cheap DS flashcart?

You can play your original games

Sorry to hijack the threat a little, but does this mean I could play ANY retail game? I'm getting confused by conflicting information in different threads. Ultimately, I'd like to downgrade using the exploit, and keep sysNAND on 4.x (as it would be after the downgrade), and have another SD card with emuNAND on the latest firmware--would this allow me to play all of my retail games, including those with the new save system after 6.x? Or is it still limited to the old system because the sysNAND is on 4.x?
