For a very long time I've been using Edison Email app which has been malfunctioning (no email alerts) with my phone (tried every option there was) for months so I had to revert back to Gmail (as it is, it's perfectly functional so can't complain it), but recently came across FairEmail which is highly customizable and am quite happy with it. I'm done with the Edison Email app (not to mention the dev who replies to reviews just says shit I already tried myself so not useful at all).

And yes, I also tried Blue Mail and Aqua Mail which are highly rated. Did not try K9 (similar to Thunderbird, apparently) although it could be worth giving a chance.

Play Store @ https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.faircode.email

The developer made the full version available free of charge via Github @ https://github.com/M66B/FairEmail/releases (the free version itself has most options enabled as it is, so it's more of a case of enabling the few customization options grayed out and/or wanting to support him)

Going by Google Play Store's top recommendations just isn't a very good idea as there are hidden gems there.
