cause newer wiis cant read DVD cause D3-2 drive,, this "new" chipset just allow original DVD games. And USB softmod is working fine!
i think this is ur problem... d3-2 chipset.

i softmod 5+ wii 4.2u this weekend and all LU74. All failed to run DVD backup but worked perfect through USB device.

i hope this solve ur doubt.

The OP said it was a launch wii, so there is no remote possibility it is a d3-2 drive, unless the op got a replacement drive from nintendo.

DVD+R needs to be bitset to DVD-Rom (rather than DVD-R), but most burners will do this automatically.

DVD+R work fine with most wiis (with the obvious exceptions, and being a launch wii that doesn't apply here), no need for a modchip at all. DVD+R actually load a little faster in a wii I have access to, but I generally prefer DVD-R.

Taiyo Yuden or MMC/Verbatim discs burned in pioneer drives give the best results, IME.

One thing you might want to try is when you burn your dvd-r 's make sure you set the speed to something pretty slow i.e so don't have it on max speed when you burn it; i'd probably suggest if your dvds are pretty cheap 4x or below

You might want to try burning an iso from another source just to make sure it isn't a bad iso that you've got.

DON'T burn discs so slow, that is outdated info.

If you have 16x discs then burn them at 8-16x. Each dye type has a best optimum burn speed (which can depend on the burner used). If you are using MCC Verbatims then 12-16x is what they should definitely be burned at. Same for TYs.

I just wouldn't use cheap discs at all, but most will give best results at the speeds above. Use imgburn to burn the disc, export graph data and use dvdinfopro to view it. Do some tests at a few speeds, and find a drive that does reliable PI/PIF scanning to check the quality of them. Or just goto a decent DVDR forum and search for the MID of the disc that you are using - see if other people have posted graphs (they likely will have).
