I know only certain drives can rip Wii games, but why? What's so special about these drives?
Not sure why their special. think they are not fussy about the media you insert into it, or the rawdump software has been written for this drive especially.
I have one underneath my bed, think its a lg if memory serves me right, havent used it for years.
there is additional data on the disc that is not forwarded by the drive
like error correction, position information and the like
and the data is encoded to avoid hardto read patterns
for wii disks parts this formats are different
with cd drive a mode that read the raw data stream became common later on
with dvd drives it did not
The correct reason is the LG-8164 can be switched to debug mode, which rawdump does and allows the full rip to take place.
Nintendo was none to happy with LG when this was found out.
