I recently bought a Saroo which has revolutionized the practicality of playing Saturn for me. I already had a pretty decent Saturn setup -- console with modchip installed, about 100 or so burned games, an original LARGE controller, one US (black) and one JP (white w/ colorful buttons) "Model 2" controllers, the lightgun that I unfortunately have no use for anymore, and OEM ram carts (1mb and 4mb) as well as an OEM memory card. And then a few years ago I bought a Retro-Bit (officially licensed by Sega) wireless version of the Model 2 controller. But still I hardly ever played Saturn, because it was just a pain in the ass. Load times, changing discs, changing ram carts, coin battery dies, etc etc.
The Saroo replaces the ram carts, has virtually unlimited save space, and allows in-game return to menu. So for the last few days, I've been playing LOTS of Saturn. And I'm just not having fun with the Retro-Bit controller. It's made well enough, and I usually do prefer a wireless controller solution when available. But there's just this tiny bit of perceptible lag, the d-pad responsiveness with the OEM controllers is just better, pairing isn't as reliable as it should be, and now that I'm really delving into the game catalog I'm seeing quite a few games where an analog control stick would be MUCH better than the d-pad. One thing I do not have yet is the OEM Saturn 3D controller, but my daughter's working in Japan right now and she has instructions to find me a couple. If she can't, they're available here too but will cost more. And there's really no wireless alternative for that thing. Yes, you can buy 8bitdo's BT Saturn receiver and use just about any modern controller with it, but none will come close to duplicating the Saturn 3D pad.
So I'm buying some Saturn controller extension cables and going back to hard wired controllers.
Anyone else tried a modern third party wireless controller and later decide the old ways are best after all? (for any console)
