not sure, but i know there is a way to turn dn the brightness which will save on the battery, go to settings, devices, controller, brightness...then adjust

in this way the light bar does not go out
I did it and put it to tenuous better than nothing
 
Think you can open it up and remove the LED but that would also not show you that the controller is charging when you plug in a charger to charge.
