Of course, rather than having a GBA and DS slot, the handheld now has an SD Card slot, something that Shigeru Miyamoto insisted upon. Iwata said that Miyamoto wanted it included and that he would show a way to use it.
This interaction between hardware and software developers is new for Nintendo as Iwata noted that during the development of the DS and GBA, the hardware developers finalised the handhelds before presenting them to the software developers. This time they listened to software developers early on in the process.
As for the camera, the plans were initially for a single, rotating camera but seeing as this would make the system bigger, push up costs and make the handheld easier to break, they settled on two cameras. Iwata also defended the 0.3 megapixel camera, saying that there isn't a sense of a lack of resolution when using the device and that as resolution increases, each picture ends up taking up more storage space.
Finally, Iwata discussed the sound quality of the new DSi. He said the increased volume and sound quality was one thing that made him happy with the DSi. Apparently sound volume was one of the sacrifices made in the move from the DS to DSLite but he feels this area has been dramatically reformed for DSi.
Interesting stuff.
