To be brief,

DS Mode: 4mb RAM, no DSi cameras enabled, no SD slot enabled.

DSi Mode: 16mb RAM, DSi cameras enabled, SD slot (maybe) enabled (depending on how you reached DSi Mode)

Only DSis can use DSi mode, not Phat or Lite DS.

Honestly, people want it for the few exclusives, DsiWARE (STILL not cracked yet) and TEH AWESOME 16 MEGS RAM, but the DSTWO, which is almost a dingoo in a flashcart, has 32MB (though it DOES lose some sending images to the DS screens) and the PSP slims have 64 MB, so most people just get one of them instead because DSTWOs COST LESS and the PSP is an already well-established portable emulation machine, and the only cart that runs DSi mode so far has been kind of a letdown.
