Hacking .dsi file type standard

I had to rename a game to a .nds for it to be recognized by NDScrc, does a .dsi file work the same?

Is it required to have it's .dsi file type to get the, "DSi Enhanced" experience?

What else should I know about this file type?

Is it for the future? Can I use it on my flash cart with a DSL?

Just rename it to NDS, I dont even think the DSi part is dumped correctly.
