Some games like Pokemon Black and White were apparently enhanced when playing them on a DSi.
I hacked mine and use TwilightMenu for DSiware in conjunction with an R4i Gold 3DS RTS Plus for DS games.

I was wondering if it were possible to also play those enhanced games as backups now?
and if so, how?

Apart from connecting to moden Wifi (But the servers are long gone) there isnt any difference running Pokemon in DSi mode, unless there is some extra features i've forgot?

I think some games actually have exclusive features. Using the DSi camera mostly. Wouldnt be surprised if that were the case for the Pokemon titles, as well

For Pokemon gen 5 you get:
WPA networks (you aren't forced to use the nonexisting official servers, there are 3rd party ones)
4-step battery indicator (like in Smash 3DS) instead of 2
Video chat in local multiplayer

Use twilight++ to start it in DSi mode. That might work.
