Hacking DS Phat volume slider

My brother broke the hinge on his DS phat a week ago, so I ordered a new case for it. I'm just finishing putting everything together and I realized I never put in the new volume slider that came with it. When I closed it up, it's hard to move the current slider, as I guess there's too much friction with the new case. I've been pulling and prodding at it to try and get it off without breaking it, but its not coming off. Is there a way to get it off without breaking it?
