those things won't last forever, but you are lucky : phat are the cheapest and the
least cumbersome to disassemble/repair.

so if you are willing to preserve the mother board,
maybe get some fancy replacement shell, screens are cheap enough.
Hinge and shoulder buttons will eventually fail with use,
but are not prone to die with time unlike rubber NDS ones.
You'll have to learn how to (de)solder and replace those.
i never replaced the BA/YX clicky buttons...they seems alike the gba SP
until then, use a strap , Keep it safe.

if you are playing at home, use a stand to keep it unfold and vertical (less scratches and dust)
between sessions

Keep it away from hot, humid environments for long periods of time. Keep it away from sunlight, even through curtains/blinds. DS Phat shells are brittle as it is, they could do with as little extra UV exposure as possible to avoid further degrading the plastic.

Not sure of fthe top of my head if there are any good options for replacement shells on the market at the moment, but if there are, consider grabbing one or two at some point to hang on to in the event that the plastic degrades so bad on the DS that it needs to be reshelled.

Above all though, don't let any of that prevent you from playing with it!

Get a wrist strap for it and wear it anytime you play so you'll never worry about it slipping out of your hands and hitting the floor.

I would say the most important thing is to apply a screen protector, specially the bottom screen, since it can scratch from use.

Another thing, if you don't mind, would be to use a case.

The issue with handheld consoles is that the screen will always have issues with time, even with normal use.
